Health research in Walthamstow

Our Future Health, the UK’s largest health research programme, is coming to two locations in Walthamstow in June. The programme is designed to help people live healthier lives for longer through the discovery and testing of more effective approaches to prevention, earlier detection, and treatment of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, stroke, and dementia.

Our Future Health are aiming to recruit up to 5 million adults who truly reflect the UK population. Recruitment started in 2022 and there are currently over 2.4 million volunteers signed up.

Volunteers give their consent to join the research programme and provide secure access to their health records, complete a questionnaire and book an appointment to have a blood sample taken, plus some physical measurements. They will also be offered information about their own health, including their blood pressure. When people have done all these steps, they are offered a £10 voucher as a token of appreciation for their time and effort.

Insights for the 10 Year Plan for Health

The Good Care Framework. What does good care look like? The good care framework was developed from what local people told us in our Big Conversation.
We asked local people open-ended questions about what good health and care means to them. At community events and in focus groups we helped local people to draw out what their own vision of good care would look like.

We took what they told us and and started to use qualitative data coding to identify themes, these themes eventually developed into the good care framework and our four pillars of good care, or four aspects of what makes the difference between good care and inadequate care. We also looked at the wider issues that impact good care at a society level-the wider determinants.
