Three-year high in attacks on NHS staff

One in seven NHS staff were physically attacked by a patient or the public last year – the highest rate for 3 years – according to the latest NHS England staff survey.

For Barts Health (who run Whipps Cross Hospital and other hospitals in East London), the figure was 14.5%, almost identical to the national average.  The equivalent figure for North East London NHS Foundation Trust who are responsible for community and mental health services in the borough (as well as three other London boroughs, parts of Essex and Kent) was 8.7%.

Nine per cent of staff in England also reported being the target of unwanted behaviour of a sexual nature (including sexualised conversation and jokes) from patients or other members of the public. For ambulance staff, this rose steeply to nearly a third (31%). The percentage of NHS staff who said they had experienced this behaviour from other staff/colleagues was 3.5 per cent.

Our NHS staff should NOT be subjected to any kind of physical attack or unwanted behaviour of a sexual nature. It was only six years ago that we were clapping, once a week, for our NHS workers to show our appreciation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Please treat our NHS workers better.
